The preferred model of family
Here's some questions in light of the Nia Glassie and Kahui abuse cases.
Should marriage and commitment be promoted among Maori instead of merely condoning living arrangements of kids who live within extended whanau with one of their parents who shacks up with whoever they please?
Anybody want to comment that a preference for a model for the family should be mum and dad and their children? Should this be encouraged and supported in public policy as it is likely to be the most stable type of family - just as Maori children who live with two adults that are not both their mum and their dad are more likely to be abused than any other children?

Two points:
1. Rather than encouraging and supporting the traditional family, a good start would be for the state to just cease deliberately transferring large sums of money from responsible parents to irresponsible ones.
2. I tend to think that people attach value to things according to the time and effort they have put into obtaining them and looking after them, children being no exception. When Mum's boyfriend beats up her kid, it is not so much due to the absence of a biological connection as the absence of work and time invested in raising the kid.
Like any 'group ownership' ideology -
Belonging to everybody means that no one takes responsibility.
Children need an adult to be responsible for them.
Poor baby.
