Folole Muliaga was one of New Zealand's most obese women

A Coroner has found that the disconnection of power to south Auckland woman Folole Muliaga's home contributed to her death. The Coroners report is here.

It found she died of natural causes due to her morbid obesity. This isn't just someone who is fat, it's not someone who is obese, it is seriously overweight. Morbid obesity is defined as being 100 lbs. or more over ideal body weight or having a Body Mass Index of 40 or higher. (update Muilaga's BMI was 60.)

Less then two percent of men and four percent of women are that obese. People that obese need bariatric surgery.

Imagine being a contractor, seeing the woman on oxygen, cutting the power, hearing the machine blare a warning that it will soon shut down, hearing the family pleading with you, and just walking away.

I guess he was a bit bothered when he found out he'd killed her, poor guy. Boo hoo hoo. Fortunately, he managed to lie to the police and his superiors and is probably out now, looking for more minorities to kill.

For him, and for the power company, there should be no sympathy. They turned the story around, lied to the police and the press, and issued an apology ONLY AFTER the story made them look bad.

Oh, and by the way, no it isn't okay to kill fat people, jerk.

Anonymous,

No where has Dave said it is ok to kill fat people.

Folole Muliaga had been in hospital for obesity related illness, she had heart disease, diabetes and hepatitis. Mrs Muliaga refused to take Western medicine, preferring to rely on her faith based spiritual healing. Mrs Muliaga had her condition explained to her and was sent home to pass away with her family, and there was a do not resussitate order on her file, she did not want her family informed of her serious condition and of course privacy laws meant the hospital couldn't tell them.

Folole Muliaga dies THREE hours after the power was switched off. In that three hours, the neighbour had offered a power cord, this was refused. No one in the house called an ambulance. No one in the house did anything excecpt play Folole Muliaga's favorite song on a guitar.

Considering the Docter's said Mrs Muliaga should not have been reliant on her oxygen concentrator (not a ventilator or a breathing machine) but an oxygen concentrator, that concentrates oxygen from normal household air, hence the power being cut off was not the cause of her death. It was found one of the contributors was the stress of the power being cut off.

But, Mrs Muliaga was termanilly ill, power on or not, she didn't have much time left.

While I have sympathy for Folole Muliaga's family on the loss of their mother, there is no way the power company, the contractor or the medical professionals caused her death.

Dave's reference to Folole Muliaga's obesity, is because she was well warned of the dangers of her body size, her health habits, yet she chose not to take action, no one in her family took action.

How can anyone be accountable for another failing to take action?
