A Cardinal Sin

Many psychologists, many psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relationship between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have demonstrated, I was told recently, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia. It is true. That is the problem.
This, unbelievably, is the recent declaration of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s Secretary of State — in other words, the Catholic church’s top diplomat with regards to the sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Yet less diplomatic, more self-serving, less righteous words have rarely been spoken.

This is the same man who, in 2002, said new internal church norms he completed to help bishops deal with abusers would not compel them to hand over molesters to the police.

I wonder what he "was told recently" about heterosexual pedophiles - by far the majority of priestly pedophilia.

At least he appears to be referring to scientific studies upon which to base his claims. To what do you? If one takes the Bible as ones standard of morality, then homosexuality is deviancy from God's perfect plan for the world (no more, nor less than is adultery, theft, murder, lying). Therefore his claims makes sense to me. I don't think he's attempting to divert attention away from the priests. I think he's attempting to explain that within the priesthood, a faction who have experienced certain tendancies have chosen a celebate lifestyle, and failed to suppress their urges.

Am I a homophobe for saying this? Not when I "love the sinner, hate the sin" including hetrosexual fornicators, adulterers, liars, thieves and/or murderers. They are all deviancy from the perfect plan and "there but by the grace of God go I."

James, the post makes it quite clear that he is not referring to scientific studies but he specifically said he is referring to what somebody told him. So does his claims still make sense to you, if so why?

I've had this discussion previously with strong Christian ex-homosexuals whom I know and trust. They don't agree with me either. Perhaps I'm wrong. I personally haven't done the study. But it "just makes sense" that unrepentent deviancy in one area indicates an on-going propensity to deviate in others.

How do we know paedophilia and/or homosexuality and/or adultery and/or fornication is "wrong"? The Bible is the absolute moral standard on this. So a willingness to deviate from it in any one area demonstrates to me a weakness that can be expanded. "By their fruits, you shall know them."

Doubtless, you will have readers who will disagree with me and suggest "judge not, lest ye be judged" however the rest of that verse is relevant: "for by the measure you judge, so shall you also be judged." I'm willing to be judged in this area.

I'm not defending the Catholic Church. I am defending essential doctrine. "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberality."

sounds like this cardinal cares more about job security than justice and truth.
